“The insurance company was most unhelpful, other than to tell us that we needed an itemization of what we had lost in the fire. How do you state with certainty what you've lost when you have nothing left but a pile of burnt timber and ashes?”
  
Were there 12 t-shirts or 10 in that drawer? How many pairs of socks did I own? Worse, we had to put a replacement value on everything. How much is that crystal vase Uncle Joe gave us for our wedding worth?
  
Well, it was a herculean task and we finally managed to do it. Fortunately for our family, I have a photographic memory and, for the most part, could visualize what used to be in that linen closet just off the kitchen, but most people couldn't do that. I was also fortunate enough to be able to take three months off of work in order to compile the list and verify the replacement value of each item. Most people can't do that either. Our only other option after the fact, was to have someone sift through the rubble, and itemize what was lost, which would have cost $15,000 and then we still would have had to take that list and determine the replacement value of each of the items on that list; assuming they were able to even remotely determine everything that was lost; a virtual impossibility given the amount of destruction.
  
Interestingly enough, this past year, I had occasion to become friends with Rena Brant of Niagara Home Inventory Inc. Would that I had known Rena prior to the fire! Here is a woman who comes into your home and helps you document and itemize everything that you need to know in the event that your home is destroyed, as mine was.
  
Rena lists the benefits of a having a home inventory on her website. I won't duplicate that information, but what I will state is that having an inventory from Niagara Home Inventory will determine for you exactly which items you own that need to be separately itemized on your insurance policy so that you can truly receive full value for them in the event of an insurance claim.
  
For example; My husband's Great-Great-Great-Grandfather was party to the printing of the very first published Bible in Canada and the publisher signed, dated and gave the first copy of the pressing to the GGGGrandfather. What is the value of such a thing? Well, had it been pre-documented, it might have been worth tens of thousands of dollars, undocumented, it was just a really old book and we had to list it on our claim as $100.
  
For a wedding present I gave a copy of an irreplaceable Beatles' gold award album to my husband, documented, it was worth $25,000, undocumented it was worth $500.
  
The list goes on.
  
Since the fire, we have kept a documented list of everything that we have purchased and filed a copy of the purchase receipt; mostly because we don't ever want to be caught in this position again. Everything of value, my laptop, Greg's Grandmother's antiques, etc., have been listed separately with the Insurance company. But, for someone who isn't in our position, ie, starting with nothing, the easiest and the most sensible thing I can suggest they do to protect themselves, their belongings and their family, is to contact Rena at Niagara Home Inventory and get her free consultation.
